Last Train From Liguria (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Through the open kitchen door there’s a back view of Elida still preparing food, most of which will have to be thrown in the bin or hauled up to Sister Assumpta’s orphanage fund. When Bella left earlier to have coffee with Edward, Elida had been squinting at small curls of pasta and stabbing them with something on the end of a pin. Now she is punching her fist into a large lump of dough.
Bella considers leaving the coffee tray on the windowsill and sidling past, but knows Elida, with the eyes in the back of her head, will be certain to spot her. The kitchen so stifling, Bella stays in the doorway, where at least she can feel the air on her back.
‘Your letters,’ Elida begins without turning around, ‘I leave for you in the chair of the hall.’ ‘Thanks. I got them. On the chair in the hall. I’m going out now, Elida.’ ‘To where?’ ‘The old town, see what’s happened to Rosa - it’s been almost a week. I’ll give you a hand later.
