3.5/5; 4 stars; B+I came across this book in my quest for fantasy stories my 12 year old son might enjoy. I think it would be perfect for that age group but I also think most adults who enjoy fantasy would like this story. Right from the beginning there is danger and adventure and all sorts of unusual magical characters.I found enough of a hook in the story about Lord Umber, to make me want to read more about this world and find out if he ever gets home. First in a series of young adult novels (or maybe a bit younger 10ish). Set in an alternate world. A boy named Happenstance is found in a cave by Lord Umber and his sidekicks. He has no memory, but seems to have some magical powers. They have some adventures, fight some bad guys, and try to discover where Hap comes from and what all his magical powers are. I think my kids would like this, but it's a lot of setup for future books in the series and the plot in this one was just OK. There is an interesting twist in that Lord Umber is actually from our world and has a computer in this medievil world which tells him how to share technology. I wish there'd been more of that, which I guess the author is saving for the next story.
just a great little adventure that is the start of something special...
