Beware - open a Splat book and it will be love at first sight. Splat the cat has a universal appeal. He is good, but slightly goofy, looking and he has an innocence, honesty and openness that kids and adults can identify with. In this book, it's Valentine's Day and he is getting ready for school, to give Kitten an extra special Valentine. Splat has a major crush on Kitten. Unfortunately, Spike the class bully, also likes Kitten. In spite of Splat's insecurities everything works out in the end! My story time audience loved this one, hanging on each detailed illustration and cheering Splat on. It is Valentine's Day at Splat's school. Splat has made a special Valentine for Kitten, on whom he has a secret crush. When Kitten sees Splat, she always pokes him in the belly, calls his smelly, ties his tail into a knot, and runs away.Oh no! It turns out that Spike, Splat's friend (and sometimes enemy!) also likes Kitten! And Spike's card is WAY bigger than Spike's.Spike thinks his card will be too small by comparison so he throws it away. But Kitten retrieves it from the trash can and reveals that she teased him all the time because she likes him!Bryce's rating: 5 starsSean's rating: 8 stars! (supposed to be a 5 star scale!)Chosen by Sean at the Huntsville Public Library. We read it together in July, 2013.
