Secret Agent Splat! (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Highly Recommended [return][return]This is the 6th book in the Splat series. Children who love the other books are sure to love this one. Splat has a mystery to solve! Someone has been stealing his toy ducks. Everyday one is missing and one is returned. Splat watches his favorite tv show, “Secret Agent Cat,” for ideas on how to catch whomever is responsible for stealing the ducks. His friend Seymour goes with him. They set a trap. The trap works and Splat finds Spike hiding in his Top Secret Hideout. However, Spike is innocent. His friend, Mouse, has been taking the ducks so he can have someone to enjoy tea with. After tea, Spike returns the ducks. Splat and Seymour realize that Mouse just needs a friend, and “the Case of the Missing Ducks was solved.”[return][return]The story is a clever mystery for young children to solve. The message of being friends is nice as well. The illustrations are the cute, comic ones that mirror the other books. There is some adult humor in there too. Splat names his favorite toy ducks: John, Paul, Ringo and George. His detective badge has a 003 ½ written on it. The story has a satisfying ending to it as everyone becomes friends and enjoys cupcakes together. This book would be a good read aloud book for K-1. Librarians could use it to introduce the genre of Mystery fiction. It is suitable for a public or school library. It might inspire children to play Secret Agent after reading this book. Overall, it’s a cute book that will appeal to boys and girls and it is a good addition to any collection. Review:I love Splat. He's being silly again. This story has wonderful vocabulary like investigate, mystery, missing, transformation and gizmo. I would use this story for a large group experience, after reading the story I would have the children solve the mystery of the missing class stuffed animal and put clues around the classroom.Learning Experience:I would make a file folder game with ducks in it like the ones in the story and the children would have to match the ducks that are the same.
