Me...Jane (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

This book tells the story of Jane Goodall as a young girl and her special relationship with chimpanzees. Her interest in chimpanzees came about because of her favorite childhood toy, which was a stuffed chimpanzee named Jubilee. Jane would go on adventures with Jubilee and she began to dream about working with animals and the things she could to do help endangered chimpanzees. At the end of the book there is a short biography of Jane Goodall as a grown woman, and readers can see that she had grown up to become one of the worlds most famous environmentalists and now works with primates all over the world to care for them and fine them safe and suitable environments. An activity that students can do in classrooms could be to choose their favorite animal and write a short story of an adventure them and their animal would go on. Me... jane. New York, NY: Little, Brown. This is a great book to introduce children to the famous, Dr. Jane Goodall and to the concept of animal welfare, caring for animals and their natural habitat. It reinforces the idea that with hard-work, dreams and aspirations, even children's dreams and aspirations, come true. While boys can learn a lot from the book, I love that it encourages girls in learning about the natural sciences. I loved looking at some of Dr. Jane Goodall's childhood drawings and illustrations included in the book.
