Miss Mabel's School For Girls (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Bianca is cursed. But she is not without power of her own; she is also a powerful witch. Bianca enters into the competitive Miss Mabel's School for Girls, one of the most elite schools for witches. And it happens to be run by the witch who cast the curse on Bianca's family three generations ago. Trained from a young age, Bianca has only one goal in mind. Enter the Competition. Win the right to apprentice with Miss Mabel. End the curse. She has one year to succeed before the curse will finalize on her 17th birthday. One year to change the course of her future. One year until she dies. This book was AWESOME. It was incredibly well written and a fantastic journey. I can truly respect an author that can take a YA book and create a cast of incredibly strong female characters. There is not a single character in this book that I would consider weak minded or powerless. This is a book a women that OWN their lives. And while I can truly get behind a romance, it was so refreshing to read a book that had not a single love interest. In fact, the entire cast of characters are almost all women. And I felt that the story was better for it. It made it stronger, it didn't allow for women to be seen as weak or dependent on anyone but themselves. Self reliant. Powerful. Strong. THAT is how to portray a woman. And Cross does it in spades.I would recommend this book to any reader who loves strong female protagonists, political intrigue, magic, and a fight for freedom and justice! I received a free copy of Miss Mabel's School for Girls from the author through a giveaway, here on Goodreads. I would just like to say that I loved this book. The summary sounded really interesting when I read it and I thought that a book set in a school for witches seemed really cool. Turns out, the book was awesome!I loved how the main character had everything at stake and how she was determined to get what she wanted. She was strong and likeable. I really enjoyed the world that Katie Cross created, although I think that there could have been more details about it. Some parts, I feel, we're a bit vague. Overall though, I think this is a really cool book. It isn't a challenging read, but it is an entertaining one. I recommend it to anyone, but I think that it would be most enjoyed by teenagers.
