My Garden (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

"My Garden" consists of a little girl's dream wish-list for what a garden ought to be. There are no weeds and the flowers are always in bloom. They can even change colors and patterns. If you pick a flower another grows back right away. The rabbits are all edible chocolate and anything you plant will grow -- seashells, jelly beans, buttons, umbrellas, and keys. The tomatoes grow as big as beach balls and the carrots are invisible (so you won't have to eat them). At night the morning glories shine like stars and the strawberries glow like lanterns. What a wonderful way to tickle our imaginations! My five-year-old son picked this book out from the library last week. This is not my favorite of Kevin Henkes' books. The story itself is fine, if not very inspired or even interesting. The test does read oddly -- I'm not sure if you are supposed to read it in the cadence of the almost rhyme that it seems to want to be, or in kind of a jerky rhythm which seems to fit the text and pictures better. The artwork, of course, is good -- very good, in fact -- but, again, not my favorite of his artwork. I was a little let down by the less-than-intriguing endpapers; I've come to expect so much more from this author/illustrator. I am giving this book four stars instead of three, however, because of the chocolate bunnies. THAT was inspired.

Kids liked this in story time. I love the illustrations, soft and dreamy but with lots of colors.
