Oz wrote this novel in a female protagonist’s voice when he was 26, and as he got older (and wiser) swore that he would never attempt that again. And yet Hanna Gonen took on a life of her own for him as he wrote this novel in a cramped toilet after work over several months while his wife and child slept adjacent in the one bedroom flat they lived in at the time.Hanna meets Michael while both are in university in Jerusalem in 1950, she studying literature and he studying geology. She is the imaginative one, living in her fantasies of adventure in foreign lands with her twin Arab friends while Michael is the boring realist relying on logic. Opposites attract and they marry, and Hanna gives up her studies to play housewife and support Michael in his career. Michael’s career is important to everyone in his family as he is the sole surviving progeny of his father and his father’s three sisters, and much money and effort has been invested in Michael’s education – Hanna must respect and honor this commitment. They have a son almost immediately upon getting married and Hanna is relegated to housework, child-minding, and husband-supporting, while nursing thoughts of a more dramatic life in her imagination, even straying towards having sexual thoughts towards a 17 year old neighbour whom she is helping with his literature studies. To add to her woes their son also turns out like Michael, lacking in empathy and ruled by black and white logic.Nothing much happens in this novel except for typical scenes of domestic life in an insular community, and many chapters begin with “the dreary sameness of the days....” Michael is conscripted into the army to fight in the 1956 war against the Arab states arraigned against the fledgling state of Israel, and this event produces some tension within the family unit. We are not introduced to any war scenes except to hear the news of what’s going on via third and fourth-hand stories from the battlefront that reach Hanna. It is her reactions to the conflict and the threat it poses to her family that we experience.When Hanna becomes pregnant for the second time after a 10-year gap, she begins to harbour feelings of jealousy towards her husband who is moving forward in his career and teaching younger women in private, while her own body goes out of shape and another painful pregnancy is all that lies before her. Hanna retreats into her private world of fantasy, inventing characters in her mind to wreak revenge on those who have consigned her to this state, and we suspect that her Michael is not being spared either. This is a pre second wave-feminist novel, and its timing must have been perfect at the time, for the issues of woman and family, and woman and career play out strongly under the otherwise slow-paced account of a young family going about its daily life in an emerging nation state. The redeeming quality of imagination and art to transcend an unhappy reality, a gift bestowed upon the artist and not on the realist, is brought into focus. In the end, Hanna is the real hero, unlike her unimaginative husband, and is able to add colour to her dull life, while Michael has to seek validation by piling on academic honours, all of which are destined to be invalidated with each successive wave of scientific discovery.
Sećam se da sam za ime Amosa Oza prvi put čuo sa 13-14 godina kada sam prelistavao katalog Narodne knjige koji mi je otac doneo. Izrelskog pisca sam tada zapamtio zbog njegovog prezimena Oz jer sam pomislio kako je lepo prezivati se kao čarobna zemlja u koju je zalutala Doroti. U godinama koje su usledile sam saznao da je to pseudonim i da se Amos Oz smatra jednim od najvećih pisaca hebrejske književnosti dvadesetog veka. Nažalost do ove nedelje nikada ga nisam čitao. Moj Mihael ili Moj Majkl (U Srbiji postoje dva prevoda koji su na dva razlčita načina preveli ime u naslovu. Ja sam čitao Lagunin prevod Moj Mihael) je lirski roman o ljubavi, braku i porodici. Kroz Haninu perspektivu posmatramo njen brak i njen život pun snova, iluzija, čulnosti, ljubavi i razočarenja. Hana, nepopravljivi sanjar udaje se za popriličnog običnog Mihaela. Zašto? Nije ni ona sama sigurna, kako joj Mihael sam kaže nikada ne treba tražiti razlog. U stvari ona sa Mihaelom jednim velikim delom ponavlja svoj odnos sa ocem. Ona ima ambivaletni odnos prema sećanju na oca, i to sećanje uvek oscilira između nostalgične čežnje za ocem i besnog odbijanja. Osobine njenog oca gotovo su identične Mihaelovim, skromnost, blagost, marljivost i poslušnost, ali njen muž za razliku od oca ima neku vrstu unutrašnje snage i postojanosti koju Hana duboko u isti mah prezire i voli. Poetizovana stvarnost, složeni pripovedački postupci, psihološki ubedljiva kompleksna i višestrana ličnost glavne junakinje su glavni kvaliteti ovog romana. Vidim da su pojedini komentari čitalaca na ovom sajtu bili usmereni u smeru da je Hana izraelska Ema Bovari. Meni nije Flober bio u glavi dok sam čitao. Od devetnaestovekovnih pisaca čini mi se da je Moj Mihael mnogo bliži Čehovu nego Floberu, pogotovo u tretiranju detalja I predstavi ljubavi.P.S. U ovom semptembarskom zahuhtavanju pred oktobarsku dodelu Nobelove nagrade za književnost Amos Oz se opet pominje kao jedan od favorita.

رواية تتناول علاقة زوجية فاترة تناضل للبقاء - متقنة الوصف مستوفية التفاصيل دون تبجح - بين حنّه طالبة الأدب و ميخائيلها رجل الجيولوجيا،أو بالأدق رجل الصقيع اليهودي الذي تحول لمأزق شخصيّ بالنسبة لها .. يلتهمها المفتعل من مشاركته إياها رتابة الحياة بقدر ما يلتهمها انزواءه، تعارف سريع- على نقيض العلاقات اليهودية الشائعة حينها في أوساطهم- جرف حنّه دون تريث لفخ زواج بارد، سيسفر عن استسلام حنّه بعد تردي حالتها النفسية والصحية فآمالها ومحاولاتها لزحزحة ميخائيل تبدو مستحيلة فالفتور تملك الجو.. حتى بات كالغمامة التي تعيق تقدم علاقتهما الزوجية و الأبوية، في أحلامها تبدو حنّه اكثر تلقائية ذات سطوة و سوداوية تثير الخامد من براكينها، ترتبط أحلامها بما يمكنني أن اسميه / أيام الصلحة/ العزيزة على قلبها حيث كانت تلعب كفتاة صغيرة برفقة توأمان فلسطينيان من أبناء جيرانها قبل تهجيرهما، تتربص في أحلامها بالحنين لهما والذعر لما طرأ على شخصيتيهما بعد التهجير .. ذلك الكره المحتمل الذي ولّده القهر وسلب الحق في نفسيهما يخيفها كثيرًا على ما يبدو ، تضعضع فارغ يلف حلمها الأنثوي ، يجعلها دومًا في حيرة حول إمكانية تلقيها للرسائل الخاطئة حول قراراتها الشخصية في الحياة .هل ستقوى حنّه على تحريك جبل جليدي وتحويله لرجل شغوف مبالٍ غير متردد أمام أنثاه!ما الذي يحل بالقدس بين يدي عاموس عوز ؟ لماذا يزهد بجمالها؟ لماذا تتحول بين يديه لفصول روتينية ممتقعة الألوان وهموم فارعة؟أهكذا يراها فعلًا ! تبدو في وصفه حملاً ثقيلًا للغاية ؟ اقتلع الوطن من الخريطة و دع عيون أبناءه تحدثك عنه فهناك مكانه الحقيقي! الرواية تجعلك تنفر من تشابه الأحداث وتبحث عن الحدث المميز، و لن تجده بطبيعة الحال .. عاموس عوز متفانٍ أدبيًا في رواياته وموهبته رغم جمالها تخفي وراء ظهرها تلميحات لا أطيق صداها .. لا يستلقي المعنى في بطن كلامه أبدًا .. والترجمة متواضعة و بائسة في بعض المواضع .

I picked this up because I had to read another book of his for a class last year and really liked it ("In the Land of Israel"); this one doesn't disappoint, either. It's a story about a doomed relationship between two young Israelis: the idealistic Hannah and the prosaic Michael. More broadly, it's about the conflict between the messianic vision of Israel as a land of prophets, and the realistic, pragmatic Israel of the Labor-dominated 1950s. I don't want to give anything away, but basically one of the two goes insane and indulges in a lyrically rich fantasy life. You get the impression that Oz really wanted to be a poet for an Israel to come, but faced with the Israel that, unfortunately, already existed, he fell into the bourgeois novel form and could only infuse his utopian and poetic visions via insanity.

في التقديم للرواية يقول بعض النقاد أنها أخطر على اسرائيل من كل معارك العرب ! و يقال أنها ترجمت للعديد من اللغات و تعتبر من روائع الأدب العبري ! حقاً لم أفهم لمذا .. الرواية تتحدث عن انسانة بنفس عليلة ، يفترض بالكاتب على الأقل أن يسبر أغوار النفس البشرية بالقليل من العمق .. يفترض به البعد عن السطحية و القشور و الرموز المبتذلة و هذا ما لم ألمسه هنا .. ربما هي بنظر البعض رواية خطيرة لأنها صورت حالة الخوف و عدم الاستقرار الداخلي التي يعاني منها اليهود داخلياً حتى حين يبدون تماسكاً و صلابة من الخارج .. حتى هذا الافتراض يبدو غير منطقي نظراً لأن الشخصية التي تعاني عدم الاستقرار هي شخصية مريضة .رواية متعبة كئيبة مملة ، علاوة على الترجمة الركيكة التي أفسدت كل جمال يمكن أن يكون فيها .لا حبكة ، لا تماسك معين لا احاطة بالشخصيات ، غموض و مشاهد مبتورة .. مجرد ثرثرة ثرثرة ثرثرة.. أنهي الجمل و أقلب الصفحات و لا أعثر على " العظيم " فيها .يدعي بعض النقاد أن قصة حنة و مخائيل هي حكاية بانيا و أرو , والدا آموس عوز ، اللذان تعرفت عليهما في رواية قصة عن الحب و الظلام و كهاوية للسير الذاتية رحت أفتش عنهما فيها بكل فضول . .. . ربما هذه هي المتعة الوحيدة التي وجدتها بين دفتي هذا الكتاب .. و الذي بدا لي ككل كنسخة أولية باهتة و غير مكتملة عن " قصة عن الحب و الظلام " .. مممم أحببت أيضاً الطريقة التي يوصل بها الكاتب إحساساً معيناً عن طريق وصف حالة الطقس و الأماكن و الألوان .
