I picked this up this morning at the library when I was returning books. It was short and I hadn't read a HoN book since I was 15. I gave up because on the series the story dragged but I thought it would be interesting to know Neferet's back story. It wasn't what I had hoped. It was boring. It was predictable and I don't feel like it really 'explained' anything. It wasn't awful though, I read it in about two hours. This book is more of a companion to the House of Night series, so if you haven't started the main series yet, then I don't think you're gonna like this book at all. If you are, however, a HON fan, this book will give you some insight in Neferet's past and why she is the way she is. One of the things I did enjoy in this novella is how the writers balanced the story so that you have to judge by yourself if Neferet's actions were justified or not. They didn't force the reader into an "oh my god, poor thing" kind of state nor did they go down the "she's pure evil" road. They actually maintain some kind of balance, which must have been hard to do. On the downside, this book has some inconsistencies when comparing it to the main story (Neferet's mother died when she was 10, not 16, etc.). Also, I was expecting to learn a bit more about Neferet, other than the fact that she was abused as child which we knew already from the main story. I understand that this is a short novella, but I expected the story to be somewhat deeper.I liked this book okay, but mostly because of the writing and being in a different setting and not really for learning anything new about Neferet's story (which is why I picked it up in the first place). Read it if you're a HON devoted fan, but skip it otherwise.
