No Hay Silencio Que No Termine (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

This is an incredible testament to the suffering that a human being can endure and still hold onto their life and their sanity. Ingrid Betancourt, a presidential candidate at the time, was kidnapped and held hostage by communist guerillas in the Colombian jungle for over six years. During that time she had no idea when, or even if, she would ever be free again. She endured starvation, endless marches through the jungle, constantly changing location to keep ahead of the Colombian army who were trying to find her and her fellow hostages, verbal, physical and sexual abuse, enforced isolation, constant taunts and insults, the ravages of various jungle creepy crawlies, and illnesses that almost resulted in her death on more than one occasion. It was literally a living hell and she tried to escape several times, resulting in her being chained up afterwards for months at a time.Betancourt is clearly a complex human being and she details her various struggles to adapt to the intolerable situation she found herself in and her clashes with the guerillas and her fellow hostages, many of whom seem to have taken a serious dislike to her and/or what she stood for. Reading her book I couldn't imagine coping with all she had to and managing to come out with a shred of my sanity intact. She is clearly an amazing woman and I found this book impossible to put down.

What do You think about No Hay Silencio Que No Termine (2010)?

If you are expecting an externally detailed, rich recollection of Ingrid Betancourt's six and a half years of captivity in the Colombian Jungle - don't. Her story is detailed, but is centred on stages of her emotional state. There are absolutely beautiful recollections and explanations (almost metaphorical poetry) about her perseverance, personal growth, internal turmoil, thoughts and frustrations. The book is an "internal" recollection. She does not, however, elaborate on her 'dark' moments, but seems to instead only cast a light on her optimistic and positive thoughts - therefore the book does not seem very sincere. Written after the event, it seems that Ingrid has transferred her current optimistic outlook of the events to the book, not her raw, honest experience at the time.I yearned for more detailed information about her fellow prisoners and the guerrillas. Information by which I could envision them, other than by their names. During the times at which Ingrid and her fellow prisoners are having to kill time, the boredom was transferred though the pages to the reader, although I doubt this was intentional. The book was too monotonous (the most exciting part was the few pages covering the attempted escape with Lucho Perez) and too "inner journey" in my opinion.

Even with all the criticism of this book, I found it fascinating.
