No Place Like Oz (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Title - No Place Like OzAuthor - Danielle PaigeSummary - It has been two years since Dorothy has returned from Oz. Two years back home where she so wanted to be. Only home isn't the same anymore. She has no friends and Kansas doesn't really compete with the wonders of Oz. So on her sixteenth birthday, Dorothy receives a gift. A pair of shoes. A pair of red shoes and Dorothy knows what she must do. She knocks her heels together, twice and says, "There's no place like Oz."But Oz has changed too while Dorothy was gone. No longer is the Scarecrow in charge and Glinda the Good Witch is missing. Instead a young fairy princess named Ozma is the new monarch of Oz. Dorothy knows something is wrong in Oz. With her Auntie Em and uncle Henry in tow, Dorothy must find the Scarecrow, the Lion and the Tin Man. She must rescue the missing Good Witch, Glinda. She must come to understand the fairy princess Ozuma who she believes knows where Glinda is. But most of all, Dorothy must master the magic she now feels. The magic coming from her shoes. For she is Dorothy the Witchslayer and she will put right what is wrong in Oz. Only will she realize that what may be wrong in Oz, is Dorothy herself?Review - No Place Like Oz is a prequel novella to the book, Dorothy Must Die and it is awesome. Dorothy begins like the character we all know and love but soon her pride and petulance quickly get the best of her. Kansas is not good enough for her and when she gets to Oz, the new Princess Ozuma must be evil. But what Dorothy does not understand that what is evil is the power she feels. Warned of it corrupting her by Ozuma, she refuses to listen and soon uses it with horrifying results. A situation she refuses to take responsibility for and quickly wreaks her vengeance on Ozuma. Only then does she free Glinda, but we are left to wonder at this point, did Glinda plan this all along? Is she using Dorothy for her own ambitions? That is why this is a prequel. It sets the groundwork for the novel to come. Building the reader's anticipation and desire for the book itself. In this, No Place Like Oz absolutely succeeds. Do not start this if you are not committed to reading Dorothy Must Die because you will have no choice but to want to get it.A terrific small read! Obviously I read this after Dorothy Must Die. First of all, let me just say I love the covers of this series so far. Simple, yet lovely. For those of you who don't know, Dorothy Must Die is about a girl named Amy from Kansas who gets brought to Oz during a tornado. She knows the story of Dorothy's Oz, but this Oz is different. Dorothy returned to Oz, become addicted to using magic, and it turned her evil. This novella is the story of Dorothy's return to Oz and how she became evil.I really enjoyed this, my rating is 3.5 stars. The world building was top notch. There is a ton of description in this novella, which normally annoys me. But seeing as this is a prequel novella, I appreciated the amazing world building. I wish I had actually read this before reading Dorothy Must Die because that was one of my issues with the novel.I had the opposite issue with this novella. I loved the world building, but I found it to be lacking in terms of characterization. I didn't really sympathize with Dorothy at all. I understand how she became all twisted (the opening scenes in Kansas really helped provide some backstory on what it was like for her to return to Kansas after being in Oz for the first time). But I still didn't really sympathize with her. Now I hate her more than I already did. That said, I'm excited to see where this trilogy is going to go. I wonder how many elements of the novella are going to come into play as the series continues.
