You could tell that winter was just around the corner. The author Jodi Picoult paints a perfect picture in her book "The Pact" of a beautiful November night. Breeze roaming through the quiet night of the Gold's and the Harte nighborhood waiting for a tragedy to happen. Hearing only the melody formed as the wind touched the water of a nearby lake. Everything was at piece until an unexpected phone call reached both of the family at 3 am in the morning. The story begins with a quick back track into a new married couple the Gold's, Michael and Melanie moving into a neighborhood without knowing anyone. There nearby neighbors Gus and James, which were the Harte's came upon them and soon after became best friends. At this time both couples were expecting a baby. The Harte's had a baby boy naming him Chris and six months later the Gold's had a baby girl naming her Emily. That soon began a life long relationship between Chris and Emily following until they were 17 years old. Emily was an artist who was nothing but quiet while Chris was an athlete who was the complete opposite. The author gives a better description when the unexpected suddenly happens. Chris is charged of murdering his girlfriend Emily one November night when they were suppose to be out. At first it was confessed that this was planned to be a double suicide between the couple but then later it was figured that there had to be killer in this situation. The Gold's didnt just lose their daughter but also their best friends as they tried to figure out what really happened that night of Emily's death. Jodi Picoult portraise a perfect picture of a teenage relationship in this story going from the importance of having communication with your spouse to the peer pressure put on you for the sexual intercorse. Not only does she expresses the relationship between teens but also the relationship between the parents. Not always are things peaches and cream and Jodi does a great job in showing that.As Chris is put in jail on his 18th birthday, he is set on a journey as he sets foot in prison. During his time in jail, he comes to realize how he didnt know Emily as good as he thought he did since truth's are revealed in the court room. Emily being a depressed teen reveals he secrets behind her beautiful smile without being alive to reveal them herself. Plain Truth is a story of a young woman from an Amish family......who is accused of killing her new-born baby.......A Lawyer is approached by a mutual member of the family to defend her. In order to keep her out of jail while the trial is prepared and takes place, the lawyer declares herself the companion of the girl..meaning she moves in with the family and sleeps in the twin bed in the same room. She ,and we, as the readers, become acquainted with the Plain people..Amish....and their entirely different way of life. Not only the obvious difference in clothing and ways of working without electricity and cars and phones and computers.....but their whole outlook on life as it is imbredded in them. The story is fascinating and filled with romance and humor in addition to the mysteries and heartache involved. Jodi Picoult is an amazing author....every book of hers is an adventure in life and literature. From the very name of the novel until the last word, the reader is never bored.
