Old Before My Time: Hayley Okines' Life With Progeria (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I applaud Kerry and Hayley's Okines for sharing their lives through Hayley's Progeria - a disease that causes the body to age 8 times faster than normal causing all the problems of old age to arise prematurely. This book not only educated me on this disease but made me aware of a very brave little girl and others like her who go through medical issues as well as social issues for being different. Not to mention what the entire family goes through together, money issues, decisions on medications, and their own emotions.Thank you both for sharing your feelings, thoughts, and dreams. Haley, you rock! God bless all of these special children. This book made me sad but Bailey YOU made me believe that you are helping find an answer by being part of the trials for medications! Rock On! Hayley is a thirteen year old child with progeria--she is aged as a seventy year old. This book with alternating chapters between Hayley and her mother tells the story of her diagnosis of progeria, family struggles, and modern medical attempts to prolong the life of children having this disease. Their average life span is thirteen years old. Fairly well written in terms that the normal reader who knows nothng of the disease can understand. This books would serve as good reading for middle to high school students and adults.
