One Day And One Amazing Morning On Orange Street (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I read this book with my 9 year old daughter and 7 year old son and they absolutely loved it. It is about the orange tree on Orange Street in a suburban neighborhood of Los Angeles and all of the people whose lives have been touched over the many years the tree has proudly stood and comforted them. The story is told from the perspective of all of the kids that currently live on Orange Street as well as the eldest resident of Orange Street who has seen many come and go. A stranger has parked across from the Orange tree and seems to be threatening to demolish the tree and everything that is on the lot to possibly build. The reader is taken back in time to the many secrets and moments that have been shared under the branches of that very tree. A tree whose origins go back to the orange trees of Valencia, Spain. A tree whose gift to all are the delicious oranges all who have experienced something by the tree have equally enjoyed. It is a beautiful story about the legacy of this tree. It is about the love, sorrow, hope, despair, joy and sadness all who have a story under the tree can tell. Although some of the stories do not have happy endings the tree remains offering its fruit and shelter. Loved it. loved it. Great book to read with young kids. This is the most complex story I have read for this young of an age group. I read it to do a book talk for 4th graders and was really surprised by the intricate way the story is told, and by the subject matter. I liked the 2nd half more than the first, and thought it was wrapped up really nicely. I think this book will appeal to kids who are more socially and emotionally mature, and who have a curiousity about people and relationships. There's no major plot here -- an intriguing mystery for sure -- but more of a character-driven novel. It's a very unique book!
