The Five Lives Of Our Cat Zook (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Oona is a ten years old and when her cat needs to go to the vet she tries to sneak him out which doesn't work out. When her mom meets the Villain and falls in love she tries to bust him for his crimes for hurting their cat. But it ends up that it was his great uncle. That wasn't a Villain at all. In the end her mom and the Villain broke up then got back together the Villain got them a new cat she confessed to the Villains great uncle that she found his cat and an alleyway with a tag on that she threw away so no one would know that he actually belong to someone and then kept him. My favorite part was when Oona yelled "HIS REAL NAME IS MUD!" at the Villain. I thought this book was so-so. I listened to the audiobook, so that may have been what I didn't like. Overall, I thought it was didn't capture my attention enough. I kept drifting in and out of the story & then I wouldn't know what was going on. The story was about a girl named Oona. She and her brother have a cat they call Zook (short for Zuchini). Her father died last year of cancer. Now the cat is sick & they have to have him stay at the vet. Oona is a storyteller & sometimes a liar. She gets upset when her mom starts seeing Dylan. Throughout the book, she is telling her brother Fred stories about Zook. She told him that it is okay that he is sick because he is only on his 5th life & cats get 9 lives. She has been telling Fred about his previous lives. These stories are pretty cute even though he dies in each one. Oona has a big secret. That is that when she found Zook, he had tags on him. She threw those away because she wanted him & because it looked like he had been neglected. But Dylan, her mom's new boyfriend knows the old owner who loved that cat. Oona ends up meeting hime & confessing. At the end of the story, Zook gets very ill & dies. Oona's mom & Dylan break up. Oona confesses to her brother that Zook isn't coming back. But after a time, they all start to heal. Dylan & Oona's mom get back together. He comes with a kitten & Fred is convinced it is Zook in his next life, even though this is a girl cat.

Great book. Sunshine state book for 2013. I cried and smiled several times reading it to my son.

Not as young or "immature" as the cover makes it look, which was a pleasant surprise.

3.5 stars The first 2/3 kind of meandered around. The last 1/3 was sad, but good.
