Ploeteren op pumps is een leuke chicklit. Het verhaal draait om Tess, die als haar baas overlijdt besluit om voor zichzelf te beginnen omdat ze niet met haar nieuwe bazin overweg kan. Maar dan lopen bepaalde zaken toch anders dan gedacht. Tess is geen aardige hoofdpersoon. Ze is een bitch, probeert altijd haar doel te halen, ook al gaat dit te kosten van anderen, en ze heeft relaties met getrouwde mannen. Ondanks dat ga je toch met haar meeleven, omdat het verhaal vanuit haar perspectief geschreven is. Bovendien heeft ze ook goede kanten. Wat ik leuk vond aan dit boek is dat het niet klagerig is. In sommige chicklits zwelgen de hoofdpersonen in zelfmedelijden. Dat is in dit boek niet het geval. Tess weet heel goed dat sommige dingen aan haar eigen gedrag te wijten zijn. Wat ik ook leuk vond aan dit boek is dat het niet draait om het vinden van de juiste man, waar het in veel chicklits wel om draait. Ploeteren op pumps is een grappig en luchtig boek,dat vlot leest en absoluut een aanrader is als je van dit genre houdt. Ik heb het vervolg, Strijden op stiletto's al klaar liggen. Ik ben benieuwd of ik die net zo leuk, dan wel leuker vind. The Agency is quick, empty read about a vile woman's rise and fall at a London literary agency. O'Brien nails all the pettiness, backstabbing, cheating, undercutting, and jealousy that agencies breed, but the protagonist, Tess Drake, is so unsympathetic, it's almost impossible to root for her. She accidentally has sex with her best friend's fiancee, but once Tess discovers who he is, that doesn't stop her from sleeping with him again, and again. Meanwhile, Tess is also having an affair with her boss's husband. Her excuse? She's weak when it comes to men. Hello -- get a backbone if you expect readers to care when your life comes crashing down. Since most of her problems are caused by her utterly stupid choices, Tess deserves almost everything that happens and then some. Having worked at a major Hollywood agency, the only reason I bothered to finished this trashy novel is out of curiosity. It's amazing that it took TWO PEOPLE under the pseudonym Ally O'Brien to write this drivel. Come to think of it, I wouldn't want my name on this either!
