Return Of The Mummy (1994) - Plot & Excerpts

"Return of the Mummy" is the sequel to "Curse of the Mummy's Tomb", a Goosebumps book I thought was kind of up and down. And interestingly, it was one of the few that didn't really end in a cliffhanger. So the fact that there is even a sequel is kind of surprising. Luckily, Return of the Mummy is better than the first. What I liked about the first is that the adults actually play an important part of the book. Uncle Ben is still his goofy mummy-searching self. He has a sketchy partner and there is even a small love story with the reporter Nila.Gabe is also much better in "Return of the Mummy." He is no longer a complete buffoon. The entire plot of Curse was predicated on Gabe getting lost or falling down. In Return, he only get's lost once. And towards the end of the book, he gets the cuts to save his Uncle and defeat the villain."Return of the Mummy" is very similar to its prequel but better in almost all ways. It doesn't reach the levels of some of the better Goosebumps books but it's definitely solid enough. My biggest issue is actually the last page. As usual, there is a slight twist in the last paragraph. Here, all that happens is Gabe says "Ouch!" Now, I know what R.L. Stine is trying to convey here, but it's a pretty dumb cliffhanger in my opinion.1. One Day at Horrorland2. Night of the Living Dummy3. Say Cheese and Die4. Welcome to Dead House5. I liked this book. We're back in Egypt with Gabe and Sari, some of the few non-white protagonists in the Goosebumps series. Sari is still an obnoxious little brat, and turning 13 has made Gabe into something of a flirt. He flirts with two adult women in this book: the flight stewardess and Nila!Once again, Sari and Gabe are spending the summer with Sari's father, Ben. He is a renowned archeologist. They are just about to open the tomb of Khor-Ru, who was King Tut's cousin, or something. One bad sign is that The Summoner, the tiny but real mummy hand that Gabe owns, has gone cold. And that's strange because it is always warm like a human hand.Gabe also gets some new swag in this book: an necklace with a 4,000-year-old beetle in amber. So cool!Nila, a hot young reporter, has an amber necklace too - but it's just empty.Dr. Fielding is Ben's partner - but Ben doesn't trust him and they get in fights all the time. There's an ancient chant on the door that seals the tomb. It's said that if you repeat the ancient Egyptian chant 5 times, the mummy will come back to life!...I thought this book was fast-paced and interesting. Even though I despise the Sari character, at least I have feelings about her, which means she isn't bland. I like being in the 'exotic' location of Egypt, and in the middle of an archeological dig. I've always liked the idea of mummies coming back to life and magical Egyptian talismans.(view spoiler)[ Nila is a 4,000-year-old Egyptian princess who turns into a scarab at night and sleeps in her "empty" amber necklace. She raises the mummy so that they can rule Egypt once more. But the mummy just wants to sleep. Gabe breaks her necklace, and she is turned into a scarab permanently. (hide spoiler)]

The book Return of the Mummy was thrilling. The writing was effective. The strength about the book is that the main character was exciting going to Ancient Egypt to see the Great Pyramid. The weakness about the book is that a character wanted to bring back a mummy back alive, but she couldn't. I would recommend this book to a classmate because I bet that they would like to read a story about people wanting to bring back mummies. If this book was part of a series I would like to continue reading the series.

This would be an entertaining book for students to get hooked into the series. However, as the book overall, it was a let down. If you had not read the first book--then you were missing crucial details. I had to read the summary of the first book to get the basic jest of the whole thing. It was unlike many series that I have read. For example, The Magic Treehouse, there are bounds of books in that series, but you don't have to read any of the others to fully enjoy the one you are reading. I do not feel that it held any academic value, but I wouldn't discourage my students from reading these books. I would fear that it would lead to discouragement of reading in general. Especially for a student who doesn't particularly enjoy reading.

"There's no way that moldy old mummified prince is going to come back to life just because I recite 6 words I don't even know the meaning of."It's another adventure Gabe has with his Uncle Ben and Cousin Sari in archaeological world. Today, they make a great discovery, the tomb of the ancient prince from 4 thousand years ago witnessed by a reporter named Nila. But the discovery leads to something else when the reporter demands to know the six ancient words and speak them out loud five times...This story is much better than the preceding one.
