She didn’t speak much, and Jack kept his arm around her shoulder the entire time. That was really all she needed, but he needed more from her. She had to find the strength to give him the closure he so desperately sought. Caroline slipped off her uniform, replacing it with one of Jack’s old Oxford shirts and a new pair of khakis. He made them herbal tea and settled next to her on the couch, pulling her into his arms again. She didn’t say anything for a while, gathering up her courage and feeding off his warmth. Jack ran his fingers through her hair, humming a tune she didn’t recognize. She sighed and straightened up. “Was I off key again?” he asked. She tried to smile at him. “No, that was kind of nice.” “I can do it again.” She’d have to take him up on that. Sooner rather than later, if their conversation progressed the way she suspected it would. She just had to know how to start it.
