Rose in a Storm tells the story of an extraordinary border collie, Rose. Katz has written this novel from the viewpoint of Rose. Rose's owner and master is Sam, a cattle & sheep rancher. Rose is a working dog, not a household pet and her whole life revolves around working with Sam to protect the sheep and other animals on the farm, as well as Sam himself. The story focuses on the time period during a severe 5 day snowstorm during which Rose shows her amazing intelligence, skills, and courage in saving her master's life and those of many of the farm animals. For anyone who enjoys dogs or any kind of animal stories, this is definitely a must read. The story belongs to Rose, a working border collie who lives with Sam on his (or, as she thinks of it, HER) farm in the Adirondacks. The title says it all: the story is about Rose, and what she does to save the farm, during an epic blizzard. Supposedly, the author met with a number of animal behaviorists to create this story which is also based on true life experiences. His imagining of Rose's brain and the way she see things is really, really fascinating. I did find it sad, though, that the only person Rose felt comfortable accepting affection from died. (this is not a spoiler.)

Tis the first Katz I've enjoyed. Will try him again. Didn't want to put it down.
