Rubí (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

This is only the second time traveling book I've ever read and I loved it. I had heard people talking about this series for awhile. After seeing it had really good reviews on Goodreads, I decided to pick up the trilogy, and oh my gosh, am I glad I did.Time travel is such and interesting and amazing concept. There are so many things to take into consideration when writing a story from a time traveler's perspective. You have to think about paradoxes and interfering with one's time line and altering something in the past that could immensely have an impact on something in the future. Then there are the historical aspects. Different time periods call for different ways of speaking, different fashions, different behaviors. So naturally, you would think writing a story like this would arise many complications. Kerstin Gier wrote them perfectly.Gwyneth is shunned from half of her family because they all believe her to be normal, uninteresting and not a carrier of the time traveling gene. She is constantly in the shadow of her cousin Charlotte who is believed to have the gene. They are all proven wrong when one day Gwen suddenly in thrown into the past without any experience or idea of how to act in a different time period. It happens to her twice before she actually tells someone, many people are furious that they were mislead, but Gwen soon discovers lies about her past, thing her mother kept from her and now she must face her new ability with no training.I must admit, the beginning is a bit slow. It took me about 60 pages to actually get into the story, but once I did I was hooked. From there on out readers are shown an entirely new world of secret groups, hidden devices that require traveler blood, people bearing magic and special abilities. Gwen can see and talk to ghosts. People believe her crazy and think she is just talking to herself, and we never really understand why she can see them in this book, but I feel like it will be something of significance later on. Then there is Gideon. He is that shockingly handsome character that you want so badly to loath, but can never bring yourself to simply because of his charm. He is handsome, smart, but we just get to know him when the book ends with a rough cliff hanger. I feel like he is going to be one to watch out for. I don't know how much he can be trusted. Lucy and Paul are two characters I am exceptionally curious about. They made a huge sacrifice that cost them contact with their loved ones but they did it for a good reason. We learn the reason soon after Gwen is introduced into the traveling world, but I can't help but wonder if they did the right thing and Gwen will end up siding with them. (I kind of hope so.)Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Being a huge fan of the science aspect of time travel, this book made my imagination go wild with all the possibilities if humans really did become capable of it. The point was also made incredibly clear of the dangers of time travel. I highly recommend this book. There are hints of fantasy and science fiction and romance all mashed into one fantastic story. I wish I had taken more time with this book as I feel like I cannot rate it fairly. I started it during the Christmas Booktube-a-thon and tried to speed through it so quickly that I feel like I missed a lot of important details. I liked what I got from it, though. The premise of this series is interesting and fun - and the covers are absolutely beautiful! Most of this book contained world building and the story didn't really get started until about 2/3 of the way through. I will eventually pick up the other books, as I have them all sitting pretty on my shelf!
