Secrets Sous Haute Protection (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
On the one hand, I did finish it. I kept reading it, and even looked forward to reading it, and sometimes I didn't really want to stop reading it. On the other hand, I can't think of much I actually liked about it. I liked Mia and I liked the Delphi Center. Every once in a while I liked Nathan and Alex. But... there's not much spark. Alex is sometimes smart, but she usually just strikes me as dumb and reckless. Maybe she's good at what she normally does, but...getting involved in this giant adventure just seems out of her league, honestly. And they made a big deal about her computer skills, but do we ever see her use said skills? No. Never. The mystery itself was pretty good I guess. Every random thing that happened that I questioned eventually tied back in to the story, which I did appreciate. But Coghan's evilness seemed a bit...extreme, towards the end. And the ending was -way- weird. I... I just don't know what to do with that. I don't know.I just don't know. Alex Lovell helps people fly under the radar. But when of her clients disappear, she suspects the client's cop husband killed her, especially when the client's boyfriend is found floating in Lake Austin. Alex goes to homicide detective Nathan Devreaux seeking help. Even though he's skeptical, he helps her out. But what he's doing isn't enough for Alex so she accuses him of not giving a shit and plunges head-first into danger.Great plot, especially the twists thrown in it. However, those twists weren't highlighted as they should have been. I felt that Alex was the main focus of the story. She was completely irrational at times. She didn't stop to think about what she was doing or how it might get her killed. She just went ahead with whatever cracked up idea that blossomed in her head, even when Nathan and Troy trued to warn her. She had a few TSTL moments. What really pissed me off is the way she was using Nathan. As long as he provided information she needed and liked, she was trying to get in his pants. When he couldn't come up with anything helpful or disagreed with her, she threw him to the curb like yesterday's garbage. I don't know how Nathan tolerated her attitude towards him. Another guy would've dropped her long before she could jerk his chain that much.So yeah, as much as I liked the story-line, the characters didn't do much for me. Nathan was totally pussy-whipped and Alex was a grade-A selfish user.
