This book was read by a summer book club I joined. What I learned from hearing other persons who read "Settling the Score" was that there seems to be a wide variance in views of plot and characters, depending on the reader's age, category preferences and personal experiences. I found myself fully engaged in the storyline, and though it reads very much like the fiction it is, I enjoyed knowing it was fiction while reading it. Does that make sense? In other words, I did not get hung up on dialogue or vocabulary or settings, etc. I simply read if for fun, and got exactly what I hoped to receive from it--enjoyment. For that reason, I am upping my rating to 4, instead of the usual 3 for a good book. Yes, it was fun!J.V. Petretta, author "An Impossible Dream Story" I'm not what you'd call a romance reader, so the fact that I finished this book is high praise. Overall, I'd say it reads a bit more like a romantic comedy than a romance novel and I do enjoy romantic comedies. I know there are a lot of similarities between the genres - as you would expect with two genres both attributed to Jane Austen - but, if you are a fan over either you know the difference. One thing I really appreciated: both of the heroes are rather inexperienced for gay men - one only having had a single lover - something that seems to happen a lot in m/m. Eden put in a section in which one of the heroes thinks about how atypical this is for gay men in general. I thought that was terrific. You can have characters who step out of the norm but the norm still exists so it's wise to acknowledge it.
