Slatki Okus Suza (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I loved this book, which was great because it's been a few months since I read something I loved. This is an epic saga told by multiple character's points of view. The insight into each character because of this construct was enriching and drew me into the story. Especially because this story incorporates many different faiths, races, cultures, religions and customs, it helped me relate to each character. And, I appreciated the themes and topics she addressed, such as war, in a way that deepens our understanding. For the most part, all of the pov's were from women's perspective accept for one. I feel this, ultimately, is a book of faith, which seems to be a running theme in the books I have been reading. The language in this book is lyrical, yet real. She moves between languages easily and fluidly and I loved that she included a glossary in the back for me to learn and understand more fully. My copy, which I got used, is dogeared from the many places that she stated something that rang true for me. She includes a lot of philosophy in the book, throughout and the character arcs for several of the characters are satisfying. "It was the worst kind of tragedy. One that originated from inside." p 40"To give voice to the words, he would have had to listen to the sound of his own memories." p 272"That he says that anger is like milk. It becomes sour, bringing sickness and death to anyone that tastes it when its time has passed.Grief, she said he likes to say, ages better than anger. It is eternal." p 351That's just a brief sampling of the passages I loved in this book. I will miss these characters and their intertwined story. I definitely would like to read her other book at some point. A masterpiece of a book. A riveting tale of a girl's search for her father, heritage and culture and in the process finding her own identity. The writer has very skillfully woven the tale with the plot circulating between US, Iraq and Pakistan. To talk about the story would give away details which I dont want just to sum it up i'd say this book had parts where I actually shed a tear or two. Very few books have the power to move you in such a way this was one
