Special Forces - Soldiers (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
This cowritten series (Voinov/Marquesate) is so good, and incredibly generous as a free (3 title, 4 parter in this case) download from Aleksandr Voinov’s website. I’m including all three parts of the Special Forces series in this review: Soldiers, Mercenaries (1&2), and Veterans, and all up they comprise an astonishing approx 1,000,000 words. The story takes place over 25 years of the relationship between Vadim Krasnorada and Dan McFadyen. Epic would be a fair word to describe the scope. They begin as enemies, soldiers on opposing sides in Afghanistan– one Soviet, the other SAS, drawn together by hatred and lust and shift, slowly and convincingly, through to lovers who would risk everything for each other and do, time and time again. Voinov is great at characterisation (I should state that the series cowriter, Marquesate, clearly is as well) and the two MC’s hook you in from the start and develop, as characters, throughout those 25 years. This is absolutely not a light, fluffy read and not without the occasional flaw which doesn't weigh against the story. It is harsh in every sense of the word, it takes place against a background of conflict and war that feels very real, and that is reflected in the events and attitudes the characters live through and the language they and others use. It is, however, a deeply romantic story about real love, its cost, loyalty, and commitment against all odds. As stated it does contain language, together with elements which fit the background of the story but which should be noted: rape, dub-con and torture, physical and psychological, amongst others. I really recommend it, although be warned, you will find yourself hooked and committed to that mountain of words. Amazing!! I feel like something this epic deserves much more than the words I am about to write. When I first began reading this book I could not understand how this was a love story. Or how it could become one. But it did. Though it began somewhere very harsh Soldiers was an amazing journey that ended as a beautiful love story. And I say journey because many times I felt like I was right there with Vadim and Dan experiencing everything they were going through. I can't wait to continue the journey...
