Spooky Little Girl (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Holy hell, I loved this book! I actually wanted to read it again as soon as I had finished it. That never happens. NEVER. This is the story of Lucy, a girl who finds her life abruptly cut short in many different ways. She has to go back and try to make things right while also coming to terms with what has happened to her. I don't like to talk too much about the actual story because I don't want to ruin it for anyone. When you read it (and you should), I want you to go into it without any preconceived notions or outside influences. I will say that this is the funniest, most endearing book I have read in a long time. I fell in love with the characters. I wanted everything to work out for them. The suspense was killing me, forcing me to shirk all my responsibilities so I could keep reading. I really couldn't put it down. I know people say that, but I really couldn't. My coworkers were gossiping behind me (juicy gossip too) and I couldn't tear myself away to join in! Also, I adore Tulip. That last line of the book? Yeah, I choked up. I'm not afraid to admit it. Love, love, love this book. Thank you, Laurie. You have created something very special. Lucy is a self absorbed dental hygienist who comes home from vacation to find her life unravelling. Her fiancé unceremoniously throws her out of their house, leaving all her belongings all over the front lawn. The dentist office she works at believes she sold money and drugs. She inexplicably test positive for drugs. Forced to move in with her sister because she's blown her savings on her trip to Hawaii, Lucy thinks it can't get any worse. Then she gets hits by a bus and sent to ghost school. She is eventually sent back to her old life to resolve some issues - but things are such a mess that she doesn't know where to start. Eventually, she figures it out (with the help of her awesomely feisty grandma,) I love Laurie Notaro and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I think i like her personal essays more. I read it entirely on a recent flight from Chicago to Portland and if I'm honest, I may not have loved it quite as much had I not been held captive with no other reading material at my disposal. It was a quick, fun read that I'll never read again - unlike some of Notaro's nonfiction.
