Summoner Of Storms (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Review for entire spectr series--a fun end to a fantastic reading year. This is a difficult series for me to review, and I've decided not to rate it until I've had some more time to mull.Unequivocally: Jordan L Hawk has a brilliant, creative mind with a fantastic grasp of plot and characterization. She could very easily become a favorite writer for me. (But... To follow)This story plays with concepts of familiar/other, mythology, paranormal, horror, the occult, voodoo, and strangely enough, polyamory. And it does it all really well. The plot arc over six books is flawless. The three main characters, Caleb, Gray, and John, are all fascinating. Fully formed characters with well fleshed out goals, motivations, and conflicts. I enjoyed watching them come together in fits and starts, and the growing intimacy was really nice to to watch. Here's the but....The mechanics of the writing left me with the impression that these books were not subject to a full editorial process. Exposition was clunky in places, too much of it delivered via dialogue. Repeated words, homophone errors (and in one notable place, both: a homophone error repeated multiple times on one page), and some significant typos. Setting relied too heavily on names of places rather than the feel of them. As someone very familiar with Charleston, i would have liked to see a deeper connection to a place I love.I think with a proper, hard core edit, this series would be among the best the m/m genre has to offer.i do not review books i would not recommend to others. In spite of its flaws, this series is a diamond in the rough, and it is recommended, in particular to fans of the paranormal, the occult, super plotty stories, and unique characters.(Review written on the ipad, not subject to a full editorial process. Fuck capitalization.) ;) I’ve read this series in one go, like very good graphic novel full of adventures and creatures and romance, but the Tiffany overdose in this one made me stop and stare in utter bafflement. I don’t know how to describe it, but so much posturing and bitching from one girl with over-inflated ego is too much. Her arrogance and thinking that she knows everything just because she was born into something supernatural – that’s outright hilarious. And her irritated attitude with Gray and John – after she led them to the obvious trap at her gran house (because it was so hard to imagine that someone with government resources would be smart enough to flag and check all her family) – she pokes at John and Gray for doing something unexpected? It’s like – huh?! The moment danger came she needed mommy or daddy to save her or tell her what to do, on her own she is helpless. But somehow she blames others for something that has nothing to do with her and pass judgment on them? Is that leadership thing?Like I said – Tiffany overdose made reading this last part really hard for me. Maybe it’s personal thing. All that machismo and loud words, scornful comments, without anything useful to add or to do. I just can’t see her as tough or strong, because usually those qualities are shown via something useful that no one else can do. In Tiffany’s case there are mostly words, to declare her a big and important commander woman. But it acts that made people strong and important – smart acts and decisions that really help others and prove that this person deserve respect. Tiffany did nothing to justify her ‘I have a right to judge you’ and ‘everything that happens is because of me’ attitude. Add to that that when the hard truth was revealed she was ready to accept defeat before they even tried to do something – and I don’t understand why such weak character made it to the end. And she is the face of the Vigilant? Huh. Kaniyar did so much better. So, I’m really glad for John, Caleb and Gray, for their connection, and Gray manifested was truly magnificent, but now I have to go re-read “Whyborn and Griffin” series, to regain my adventure/characterization/romance equilibrium.
