The 13-Storey Treehouse (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Andy and Terry have a 13-story treehouse, a machine that follows you around and shoots marshmallows in your mouth whenever you're hungry, and a deadline: they need to write a whole book (which they were supposed to have been working on all year) by tomorrow. Which would be no problem if it weren't for distractions like the arrival of Terry's order of sea monkeys, which turns out to be a bit defective and time-consuming. This book's a lot of fun, and it's also "clean"--the rudest thing in here is a burp--so it's perfect to recommend to kids whose parents balk at titles like "The Day My Butt Went Psycho" or Captain Underpants (though kids who enjoyed those will enjoy this, too). The girl and I saw Terry Denton talk at the Kids Book Festival and finding him totally hilarious, she wanted to get her hands on his and Andy's books. She read it unprompted by herself in three evenings, giggling throughout the book, and now spends her free time drawing elaborate treehouses. I read it to an active almost 3 year-old boy and surprisingly he sat listening to the whole book. It's silly and quirky and full of fun - exactly what our a-bit-too-serious family needs.
