These kids are just awesome, and while the books can get a bit preachy and...very strange at times, I really enjoy them.Matilda is my favorite character. Maybe it's because she's a tiny East Asian girl like myself. She's also really awesome.I saw myself in her so many times throughout this book. Not really sure who to be, trying to be a tomboy, channeling anger into violence. It was quite spot-on, although by about fourth grade I didn't really care whether or not my parents split, since their relationship was so conflicted it might've been for the better. Also, can I just say she and Duncan are the cutest thing ever and I really wish there had been a bit more about their relationship near the end?However, I wasn't nearly as satisfied with Heathcliff/Simon/Screwball/Brainstorm's character development. He's just not a satisfactory villain. His reason for turning to the dark side is really flimsy, and there's never that moment of vulnerability where I could connect with him and relate, and I've been bullied before. Also, I felt so bad for Gertie. Being trapped in an alternative universe where you're the only person on the planet at age twelve, doomed to stay there for the rest of your life, is horrible. She really didn't deserve it at all. I know it was her own sacrifice, but I just felt so terrible for her.Hopefully next book we'll get more of the Hyena? I love her :D Anyway, conclusion: Awesome book, go read it
