The Destiny Of Violet And Luke (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
This is going to be a bit if a rent.Okay, a lot of a rent. You have been warned.I didn't write anything about the first two books in the series which don't actually matter when it comes to my opinion about this book so I won't bore you with the gory details. I really liked the coincidence, not so much with the redemption, but I was intrigued by Luke which leads us here.So I might've been expecting too much, but this book wasn't at all what I signed up for.My opinion about this book can practically be summed up by this quote said by Luke - "I'm scary as hell", to which Seth responses by - "No you just think you are".Both Violet and Luke have built up a wall in their minds, shielding them from the harsh and cold outside world, because of some crazy messed up shit they've been through, which I completely understand. What I don't understand is how the tough game they think they're playing is translated into action. Because it's not. I saw messed up kids who've decided they want to sit in the grown ups table, but are too small to fit the chairs.I also didn't understand their relationship at all. Their banter seemed very repetitive and silly and not at all witty or flirty to me, coming back again to my issue with how things happening in their heads just didn't quite translate into reality. They were moving far too quick for my taste and to a very unhealthy relationship. ” He has this silly, drunk, innocent look on his face that actually makes my heart miss a beat” - right, because drunk people are attractive. And on this note, might I just add how incredibly drunk Luke is at all times? That is messed up. And yeah sure he is messed up, but from Violet's pov her heart should skip a beat because he might throw a bottle at her one day, because he also has anger issues and control issues. A lot of issues frankly. “Everything you do is my business.” - says Luke to Violet, while drunk *surprised gasp*And when he apologizes for being an obsessive controlling douch, she calls him intense. Intense is when you're watching inception for the hundred time, still trying to figure out if the ending is a dream or not, not when a guy three times your size is being a creep in your vicinity. Luke was very stereotypically a male protagonist in a new adult novel; tatted up bad boy, degrading women, mummy issues. And I felt the same way about Violet. I mean, did she HAVE to be a virgin?? I know it's petty but a) it didn't line up with her character and b) why is being the poor messed up vulnerable virginal Mary Sue who gets her first actual sexual experience with the aforementioned bad boy stereotype the go to plot for na novels? It just feels repetitive, overdone and unnecessary. Plot wise - predictable. The cliffhanger didn't leave me hanging at all and I don't have much else to say about it. Would I read the next book? Probably not.As for her other books, most likely I will. I do think her writing is pretty good and I'd like to know how she addresses different subjects and situations of abuse. Side note - for this book I was expecting a little more focus on the diabetes aspect of the matter, which I wish she had taken the time to explore and handle better than have him check his insulin levels ( which if I'm not mistaken is not something you even do as a diabetic. you check your blood sugar levels, but again I'm being petty) . I loved it! Definitely a 5 stars!Although i couldn't add it to my "Holy grail" folder just because it's kind of dark for me i really loved it.Luke and Violet are really screwed up but connected to each other by their past and by the love that it's growing with every day even if they don't see or don't wanna acknowledge it.The finale was heartbreaking for me even though i was epecting to be this way, so i can't wait for the second part :).Thank you Jessica Sorensen for this amazing book.
