The Dresden Files: Fool Moon, Volume 1 (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I really wanted to like this book, but 3 stars is probably generous. There is nothing wrong with the story, as it's basically a pretty accurate retelling of the novel (as far as I can recall, it's been a while since I read it). The problem is that I didn't really like the art. I felt it was too cartoony when it needed to be much more grounded in reality (ironic, I know, for a book dealing with wizards and werewolves). Also, what worked in the book didn't work so well here, namely the fact that there are three different groups of werewolves in this story - the graphic novel makes it difficult to distinguish which group are which. Finally the werewolves were mostly just not scary enough. This is the best of the Dresden Files graphic novels so far, I think. The artist has changed yet again. I like him better than the original guy; he really captures the gangliness of Harry's figure, and he's not bad with the facial expressions. I also think his Susan looks much more like I imagined her to appear. My biggest gripe with the adaptation is the scene in the warehouse with the lycanthropes is underdone. In the novel, that scene is one of the most terrifying situations Harry has been in at this point in the series, and I didn't get that urgency at all. The one page (a cover) by the artist who did the second half of Storm Front, Vol. 2 conveyed to me more of the tension of that scene than the actual pages of this book.Part II comes out in three weeks, and I've already got it preordered. I really hope they continue these, as I'd really like to see book three in graphic novel form.
