She feels like she’s going to have to leave (or be evicted) and move back in with one of her parents, who are in the middle of a lengthy divorce. In an effort to cheer her up, her best friend, Beatrice, takes her to a swanky party thrown in Manhattan by a member of the wealthy Astor family. There, Gwen meets Aiden Manning, a strange, if handsome and somehow charming rich man. She runs into him again the next day at a Starbucks, where, after she shares her woes with him, he makes her a startling offer: pretend to be his girlfriend (for reasons unknown) and he will take care of her money problems. Gwen initially refuses, but when all other avenues of fixing her problem are exhausted she decides to accept. The contract arrives at her apartment while she is watching When Harry Met Sally with Beatrice. In an attempt to keep Beatrice from knowing the whole truth, she claims it’s just a non-disclosure agreement she must sign to start a relationship with Aiden. She signs it without reading the rest.
