a voice spoke melodically to him, soothing and low in its tone. “Kestrel dear, can you awaken?” the voice repeated moments later, a note of anxiousness almost evident below the surface. Kestrel was listening to Kai’s voice, he realized. He opened his eyes, and saw that they were in a place of total darkness, except for the light that seemed to shine from Kai herself. He took in a deep breath, then spoke. “My goddess, what have I done? Where are we?” “We’re in the world of sleep, Kestrel, where I need to keep you for a little while so that you can recover,” the goddess told him. “What did I do? Why did you attack me? Was that you?”
