The Last Guy Breathing (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Extraordinary Men, Exceptional SeriesI am posting the exact same review for each of the three books in this series for the following reason:Rarely if ever have I been diverted from reading in the manner that I am accustomed, i.e., hopping back and forth between three or four books of different genres when I need a break from the one I'm currently lapping up. But I was so caught up with "The Guy From Glamour" that I had to go on to both "The Only Guy" and "The Last Guy Breathing" almost as soon as I put each one down.My heartfelt advice is for you to do the same. Read the outlines of each book, cock an eyebrow like I did, and plunge in. This is what m/m romance is all about, and I defy you to keep a still heart or a dry eye, in any of them. REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE4.5 StarsI think Henry and Deputy Locke may have just become my favourite couple in this series so far with the Deputy becoming my favourite person overall. I love that he was snarky, forever smirking and although completely dedicated to his job as a police officer there was something dark just below the surface, making it easy to believe he had once been one step away from becoming a criminal before he chose his path in life to protect his brother and become a positive influence.Deputy Locke had a crappy childhood with a complacent and later broken hearted father and a mother who gambled and didn’t care much about her two young sons. When she ran off and left them life got worse still and Locke found himself having to care for his brother James, even getting enough to eat some days was challenging.Although involved in petty crime as a young teen he made a conscious decision to become a good influence due to fear his brother would follow down the same path. His decision paid off and James is now well on his way to becoming a lawyer, he is a happy young man who craves peoples love and affection and Locke would go after anyone who hurt him.His upbringing though left Locke closed off and untrusting. The lack of love he was shown as a child has become twisted so he now doesn’t believe he is loveable. With that in mind he has casual hook-ups that he always walks away from the next day. The walls around his heart are impenetrable until Henry sneaks in under his defenses and blows it all to hell.Henry recently moved back to Glamour to aid his mother after his father died. The place itself and his childhood home don’t hold good memories for him; he was never good enough for his father as a child or as a young man and he suffered his verbal abuse for years. He was too fat, too gay, and not clever enough and the derisive comments were fed to him on a daily basis whilst his mother stood back and did nothing to help. He has lost the excess weight, he has a solid career as an accountant he enjoys and he drives a fast car for thrills but his confidence to date and meet people is shot when all he can hear are his father’s aggressive and derogatory comments in the back of his mind. His fast car is the very thing that brings him to the attention of Deputy Locke and not in a good way. The Deputy has issued him with more speeding tickets since he returned to Glamour than he has ever had and the two men hate each other with a passion. When they are asked to work together on a fraud case by the Sheriff neither man is pleased. Although the case brings them together as they have to share ideas and try and find the culprit without getting themselves killed it wasn’t the part of the story I enjoyed the most.I had a lot of fun watching poor old Locke discover that he wasn’t quite as cold and immune to people as he thought. Henry is clueless about the affect he has on the other man and how much angst he is causing the other man by just being himself. There is a lot of hot sex and Locke is a dominant partner that brings out a whole new side of Henry. Whereas Henry is able to admit he is falling for the Deputy Locke is terrified of his feelings, never knowing the right thing to say and reverting back to being curt and snarky and thus confusing and hurting Henry. As the case draws to a close Henry’s reasons for staying in Glamour close with it. Locke has had an arguement with his brother and is even more closed off than usual and the three words that Henry is dying to hear seem to have gotten stuck. Locke will have to man up, stop worrying about his pride, and take a leap of faith that he is indeed loveable if he is to get his man.
