The Night Fairy (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Not my favorite. I didn't really connect with the fairy character. I found her a little cold-hearted, and not particularly identifiable. I liked the miniature world, I liked how she viewed daily things in an extraordinary way "giantess" and flower pedal clothes, etc. But over all, I found it slow. If I were a child I would not have had the attention span to complete it. Perhaps there are more attentive children out there who would disagree.Sill a fan of Laura Amy Schiltz, just not The Night Fairy! By a Newbery Medal Winner, this is a wonderful fairy tale, literally, that melds classic poetic prose with a contemporary slant. Flory, the main character, is a Night Fairy whose wings become damaged, so she is forced to rely on others. A good little moral about reliance and dominance with a strong female role makes this a wonderful book for kids who love fairies or fantasy. (As an adult, I enjoyed the story's imaginative details as well.) I picked this up at a library sale because of the gorgeous illustrations by English artist Angela Barrett. One of those books I suspect that gets handed down to the next generation.
