The Root Cellar (1985) - Plot & Excerpts

So far I have read that Rose has shifted/transported in the root cellar to Canada. In Canada she meets a boy named Will and a girl named Susan but when Rose shifts/transports again back home and than back to Canada again she was shocked by the 'time' she has been gone from Will and Susan more than ayear definatly. It was a cold afternoon that Will anounced to Rose and Susan he will be leaving to go join the northern stats army forces, susan is struck with a bundle of fear and saddness for him. Will threatens to break both of Susans arms and throw her in the bay if she tells Will's mother that he is leaving, she promises that she won't say word about him and the army. rose and susan have just walked in a village hoping to find work when a blacksmith offers rose a job for 25 cents a day rose wants more money so she says no the the blacksmith tells her that if she works hard enough he`ll pay her a dollar a day rose takes the job and at the end she asks for her pay and the blacksmith says she only gets a dollar rose gets so mad that she snatches the money out of the black smiths hand and runs she took more than she was owed she took 11 dollars from him. rose is being chased along the road when she hides and the men go back to the village, but a man on a horse waits knowing that rose would come out sometime in the day.rose comes at from her hiding spot the man gives rose 5 dollars for her supper because rose tells the man to give back 4 dollars to the blacksmithon his way back to the village. susan finds rose and gives her food and some clothing which she traded in for the money, rose thanked susan and they both were on there way to the train station for thier tickets to new york were rose used to live when they got there rose fainted because she was cold and she wasn`t in the same new york. This is the best part of the book now, can you guess which part? The three teens went to miss jerues house to tell her the news about her son she was heart broken after every story was told, rose confessed all about how she was a girl and that she did run off to go find Will in the south. Finally Rose transported back to her aunt and uncleeven though it was weeks for her in the older days it was the same exact day that it was before she left. It's Christmas and Rose is the cook at first she depends on susan to makethe christmas dinner but everything is cold so Rose takes a turkey platter and puts some sausages ontop and Rose is upset and nervous at the same time. When everybody set down at the table Old Tom told Rose about Miss Morissay.CLICK.Came to rose head susan was the one who was always heping rose so susan was already dead but when rose went tothe root cellar to transport she was going back in time. THE END

The type of person for this novel would be anyone who likes civil war books with a twist of adventure and excitement. I loved this book! I gave it 5 stars. I thought the way the author incorperated time periods was very creative i liked the sense of adventure and a little mystery. I related to how she wanted to make her wrongs right in the end of the book. And i liked how the author shared a lesson of how even though you may like something and you can choose the easy way out oryou can correct your mistakes and go back where you belong. Rose themain character, learned through out her journey that taking the easy way out isnt always what you should do and you should lear to give new things a chance.

What do You think about The Root Cellar (1985)?

The root cellar by Janet Lunn is an exciting story about a young girl who has to go live with her aunt nan and uncle bob when her grandma(who took care of her ever since her parents died)dies. when she gets to the house it is beat up and looks horrible to live in, a woman Mrs. morrisarry appears and asks what happened to her house. Mrs. morrisarry knows rose by name which kind of creeps rose out since she has never been there before. rose gets even more scared because Mrs. morrisarry "shifts" and can go through walls and just disappear out of sight. one day rose finds a root cellar and goes down into to it when she comes back up she travels two hundred years into the past while the civil war is taking place. she meets two kids her age and becomes friends with them and eventually she decides she wants to stay there. when she returns will has left to go to war and rose sets out to try and save will before he dies. I recommend this book to everyone who loves a twist in a story

i read this book back in elementary school, and i enjoyed reading it at the time.the story follows this orphan girl named rose who is sent to live with relatives after the death of her grandmother. rose is something of a tomboy and doesn’t really have any friends, so doesn’t feel like she fits in when she arrives and spends a lot of time by herself. one of the places she likes to spend time in is a root cellar near the house, and one day she goes into it only to find herself transported back in time to the 1800′s. there she meets a boy and a girl with whom she becomes friends. at that time the civil war was going on, so the boy goes off to fight in it, and the sister and rose then go off in search of him.it’s a good story about a girl finding a place for herself to be accepeted and needed, and be finding that she gains a little more self-confidence. it’s fun and adventerous and even throws a bit of history in there as well.

I first read this in fifth grade, and it made enough of an impression on my that I sought it out after reading The Freedom Maze, which has a similar premise. Rose is a bit of a pain in the beginning, but I don't entirely blame her; she is 12, her grandmother (the only family she's ever know) just died, and she's been shuffled around other family members for a few months. Who wouldn't be kind of annoyed by life? The plot actually had me a bit worried about how Rose would get back to her own time, and the ending was so sweet.
