The Storied Life Of A.J. Fikry (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

This book was recommended to me by my English teacher. Thanks to her and like almost every book store in the city centre I built some-what high expectations. To be honest they weren't exactly met.I really enjoyed this book. I can honestly say it is a page-turner but in a very particular way. I have noticed this with books that aren't something spectacular but have beautiful writing. The style is simply better than the plot and it's what makes you turn the page. This book isn't something spectacular but it is touching. I really like the characters, but they aren't developed much. The story skips through time, which I both like and dislike. I am glad it is straight to the point and not adding needless bullshit, but at the same time the time jumps were at times sudden.I would recommend it to book lovers and book store lovers. There are a lot of books mention and I think it would be fun for the people who have read some of these and it will add something else to the story as well! This is a lovely little sandwich book. AJ Fikry is a widower who lives above his bookstore and is slowly drinking himself to death when he meets a pretty young bookseller from one of his favorite publishers, suffers another loss, and then discovers a toddler left in his store with a note asking him to care for her. He ends up raising Maya in the bookstore, and strikes up a close friendship with a local police chief. AJ is a lovable character after you get past his initial gruffness. He loves reading as much as a bookstore owner should, and each chapter begins with a brief note from him about a book he read. It's a story I'll remember for a long time.
