The part of the property cleared had yet to be filled and leveled, and resembled a series of tar pits; clumps of the gooey mud clung to her boots from her earlier walk around the site. The thought of Hiram seeing what she’d done to the place where he’d lived . . . No, he hadn’t kept the place in pristine condition, but it had been his home.
