My Wife and I are rabid Terry Goodkind fans but since the advent of The Omen Machine and The Third Kingdom, my appreciation for the Sword of Truth storyline has waned tremendaously. I feel Terry should have ended the series on the high with "The Confessor". Any new novels should have completely new characters and/or storyline without the interaction of Richard/Kahlan as was the case of The First Confessor". I normally finish any new title the day it arrives but due to my disappointment in the last 2 books "Severed Souls" has languished on my bookshelf with a rare glance given to it. That being said - I will get around to it one day. I find myself frustrated with the later books in the series. Endless repetitions drove me to extreme irritation yet those feeling were mitigated by cleverly written scenes and phenomenal feats of imagination interspersed throughout the otherwise somewhat pedantic and mediocre text.I don't want to rag on Goodkind, as I really respect and enjoy his body of work - at least in the abstract if not necessarily in the actual execution of later novels. I will continue reading because I need to know what happens and I'm hopelessly hooked. I would just wish that the characters were closer to their original forms and not the shadows of former strength and glory they now seem to resemble. I find Kahlan returning more to the awesome badass character I know she is in The Third Kingdom while Richard seems to be mostly surface with no depth (and with an inexplicable need to repeat every point several times, even in his own thoughts). This would be okay - who can't use a recap now and then? - provided you only read 1-1½ pages a day. In such a case the repetitive tactic is excellent. In short - the novel moves the series forward, but I'm not entirely happy with the way it's done.
Great book! Goodkind still has me on the edge of my seat the entire time!
