I would love to give this book 5 stars since I love Trudi's Work. The plot and characters become very interesting, so much so that I am itching for the next book. The ending is fantastic in leaving you wanting more. However, I did say they 'become' interesting. Unfortunately, the novel takes a while to start to get to that point. I found the male protagonists story the slowest, only getting interesting when he is on the run. This, surprisingly, considering it's a huge part of his story, takes a long time to begin. Funnily, I did enjoy the other story line sooner, even though her story is mostly character lead for a longer time. However, when the book started to build pace the story became irresistible and I can't wait for the next one. Just a shame it's not out for Christmas. First of her new series, Millennium's Rule, and it was a great start to trilogy. Very much a similar feel to the Age of Five series, which is a good thing. If your new to Trudi Canavan you will find both her male female heroes are well written and interesting, even better you become quite emotionally attached. The plot has good pace with enough description to allow you to immerse yourself in the story. This book focus on 2 characters Tyen and Rielle. Tyen is a University student studying history and magic. While on an archaeological dig he finds a book that is very old and use to be a women, Vella. This discovery sets of a chain of events from being framed for the theft of this book to travelling to far distance places and a very different life he had planned for himself. Rielle has always been able to see magic but has always been taught that its use should always be restricted to the Priests (who are all men). Being caught using magic means you are tainted and punishment is to be imprisoned for life. I feel sorry for her, she a strong willed person but has not much experience of the world and makes mistakes because of that.I don't want to give any more away but the magic use in this book is interesting and feels fresh but still very well thought out which is one of the authors strengths. Really looking forward to the next book coming out.
