Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond Between A Soldier And His Service Dog (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
I thought this was a very well done book on a very difficult and touchy topic. It was truthful, it was honest, it was pictorially perfect, from my pov. I thought the photographer, Dan Dion, did an exceptional job of capturing the emotional connection between the dog and its owner as well as using a variety of angles and perspectives to give the story visual variety. The only element that seems the tiniest bit off is the title. Somehow, it seems to isolate a single element of their relationship when the book makes it clear that they mean so very much more to each other. A marketing decision, I am sure, but a curious one, from my pov. This is a Goodreads 2014 picture books final nominee. I am a cat lover, not a dog lover, but Tuesday is one huggy, beautiful service dog that narrates this sentimental tale of working with a physically and emotionally wounded veteran. This is the picture book version of the tale many readers seem to already know and love, so it may be even more deliberately emotionally manipulative because it is for children, I don't know. And it is sweet as it tells at least three important stories that need to get told more: 1) the story of the far too many permanently disabled who fight our endless wars for us and receive fewer benefits than they deserve and 2) the increasingly important tale of service dogs and their role with so many disabled and 3) the story of the disabled of any kind that need society's support. If this book gets people to vote for people who will give more money to the vets and any who are (like my autistic son) disabled, and moves people to give money to organizations so that more service dogs get trained, then it has done a great public service. Tuesday Tucks Me In is a nonfiction book that educates primarily about service dogs, and secondarily about disabled vets, and it's good. I didn't think it was as awesome as most readers did, but I did like it and think it serves a good purpose.
