Twenty-six Pirates: An Alphabet Book (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
I read this with my kindergarten students because they're counting down to the end of school using the alphabet and I thought it would be fun to read. They thought it was funny and laughed at the names and antics of the pirates, but they had one very astute observation: Where are the girl pirates? I wondered the same thing. There is a girl on the back cover and when we got through the book, they wanted to know where she was in the story. I agreed. One of my kindergartners even said, "I think they forgot to put a girl in, so they just shoved one on the back cover." And I agree. So while the book is cute, it could do with some girls. After all, little girls can be pirates, too. This is an alphabet book, but probably not one you'd actually use to teach it. The font chosen for the pirates' names, while it is fun and matches the piratey theme, may confuse children in how to make the letters. Also, while I appreciate books trying to be multi-cultural, Juan for J could be misleading if you are trying to teach the appropriate sounds for each letter. The pictures are adorable and the rhymes are funny.
