I'm an evil person, but I was so happy when Peter Parker died. Miles was pretty cool and my favorite part is when he's being drawn by a lottery for a school. It seems so unfair that kids should only have a future by chance or background, and while the part of discovering his superpowers and saving people might be typical, I would really like to see this series focus on the inequality between people. My love for Ultimate Pete Parker is well known and I've held off joining Miles in his new life (despite the glowing reviews and praise) for this reason. Time finally to put that aside.Very impressive. Hats off to BMB and Sara Pichelli. Miles is a great character, adorable, sweet and far too innocent. They've really managed to retell the origin in what feels like a completely different way. Emotional beats are reversed (see Mile's reaction hanging upside down for the first time cf Pete's the first time round), the tone remains light with the right level of dramatic but with different emphasis and it all just works. There's a very different status quo with Fury being involved this early, yet it makes sense. Plus, the recap of Pete's death just made me well up again.The art works well (Sara's style finally grew on me) and the inking really stands out. My only complaint is it flew by.Based on this I'm very keen to keep reading. I hope they manage to allow Miles his own stories without forcing too many crossovers with the Ultimate universe at large.If like me you've held off in honour of the sorely missed Peter Parker then put that aside and pick this book up. It carries the torch with respect and more than a touch of competence.
First time reading a spidey comic. I must say at first it was kinda hard...but Miles grew on me. XD
