As expected with an anthology, the stories are a mixed bag. Several of the stories are sequels to stories from earlier Valdemar anthologies. I think there's a greater mix of time periods than usual and several stories actually use Lackey's characters, rather than just her world/setting.The unexpected delight is "Warp & Weft" by Kristin Schwengel."Heart's Peril" by Kate Paulk & "Heart's Place" by Sarah Hoyt revisit Jem & Ree. (I think those two are well on the way to writing any entire novel around Jem & Ree. *grin*)I disliked "Bride's Task" by Micahel Z. Williamson & Gail L. Sanders because I really like the idea of Heralds and the story portrays all the Heralds as stupid, arrogant and close-minded.I disliked "Discordance" by Jennifer Brazek simply because it's badly-written. It reads more like a first draft by an first-time writer rather than something ready for publication. A nice compilation of short stories set in Valdemar. These range from stand-alone novellas to quick vignettes that fit in between other major events already established, as well as an essay that gives a good glimpse into the world-building that goes on behind the scenes. I would recommend readers new to Valdemar start with the full-length novels to fully appreciate the stories and the essay in particular.
A fun jaunt into Valdemar, but I never find these collections as satisfying as Lackey's own work.
