Moving Targets And Other Tales Of Valdemar (2008) - Plot & Excerpts
This book had a lot of great stories in it. Some of my favorite authors have stories in this collection this includes Tanya Huff, Rosemary Edgehill, Fiona Patton and Judith Tarr.I have a love hate relationship with Mercedes Lackey's work. I love the world of Vlademar as a horse crazy woman the companions really appeal to me. The issue to me is Lackey can't help but add silly things and make angst filled whiny characters when writing for Valdemar luckily this trends does not seem to be an issue with her other works. Her story was the weakest. Moving Targets is basically a retelling of Scooby Doo cartoon with heralds and companions. I enjoy tongue in cheek humor in fantasy novels but not when it is done in what is supposed to be a serious world. Then it is just to jarring for me it reminds me that this is not a real world but just a creation in a book. I would have given this book six stars if Moving Target had been a good story. But one would hope that the author who created the world would have one of the best stories not the worst one which is why I took a star away. "Moving Targets" is the fourth Valdemar anthology, I believe. I quite like the way Lackey invites other authors to play in her backyard, so to speak. It's like authorized fan fiction, really.I liked all the stories, but my favourite is probably the final story, "Widdershins" by Judith Tarr. That could be because it has to do with the bond between horses and riders, something which Tarr well understands, as she raises and trains Lippizaners. The title story is a bit odd at first, but when I realized that Mercedes Lackey was actually spoofing "Scooby-Do," I really got into it.

Meh. An uneven set of short stories, but die-hard fans of Valdemar may enjoy reading them.

These are not written by Lackey. Only 1 is although they do deal with Valdemar.
