Brace met his gaze. “Now what is it you need to speak to me about?” “Sir, you will recall that on several occasions I have expressed my appreciation to you for the marvelous work you are doing to take so many orphans off the streets and send them out West on the orphan trains.” Brace nodded. “You certainly have, and I appreciate your appreciation.” “Well, I’m here to tell you about a small colony of orphans on my beat who are about to starve.
