Wolverine & The X-Men By Jason Aaron, Vol. 1 (2011) - Plot & Excerpts
Jason Aaron revisits the original concept for the X-Men--a school for mutants--only this time the headmaster is Wolverine, who wants to spare his students the violence that's marked his life and tenure in the X-men. It's an interesting concept, but the writer goes for a madcap tone, with a zany setting, zany crew and even more over-the-top villains.It could be a lot of fun, but this volume didn't really pull off the trick for me. The idea of school inspectors giving the mansion a horrified once over is a solid one, but all the characters involved, students and faculty alike, seem a bit one-note and frantic. Not to say the story has to mope, but the players involved seem to be an assemblage of snarky one-liners, each striving to outdo the others. There isn't to be much depth at work.The villains in the peace don't help. They're the new Hellfire Club, are basically a bunch of obscenely rich, murderous 12-year-olds. I don't like the idea to start, but it's further burdered by Aaron's inability to settle whether he wants to take it semi-seriously or blow it up into some gonzo parody. That wavering approach extends to the rest of the story is well.Chris Bacchalo does his signature angular attack on the art. I enjoy a lot of the elements--the mansion, Iceman, a miniature Krakoa--although I'm not always positive what's happening in the action. Still, the art is fun and matches the tone...even in its lack of subtlety.Read digital versions It's cool to see a comic that takes a some what similar storyline that the TV show of the same name did. I was a big fan of that show, and I'm really sorry that they were unable to continue it. It's not a continuation of that show, nor is it the same characters, but it's still fun to read. I really liked the art of Nick Bradshaw. Looking at future collections and it seems like he does a lot of the art, so I'm looking forward to that.
