Young Avengers, Vol. 2: Alternative Culture (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
This volume continued both the things that I enjoyed and the things that bothered me about the previous volume of Young Avengers. It has the trendy social media openers that are informative, but kind of annoying to read. The characters remain somewhat ill-defined, but at least they start to address that issue, here (though there are some unexplained costume changes that I suppose you are meant to accept as having occurred off-panel, since this story spans space and dimension. I find that aspect of it interesting, and it is interesting to see how different characters' perspectives skew their own narratives. It's fun and complex, and brings in a new character. Overall, this was enjoyable, and I am interested to see how it ends (and since there is only one more volume, I am led to believe that it will end). I'm starting to like this series better with volume 2. Still wish some of the characters would get developed a little better--Marvelboy, for instance--but the plot is moving along nicely. This a is a well-written book, with just the right touches of humor, and a penchant for laying groundwork early and playing a long game with plotting. The artwork is a perfect match. I don't know that I'd say this is the greatest superhero book I've ever read, but it's definitely quality stuff.
