If you're a cat person, this would be a great book. It tells the stories of some wonderfully special cat-human relationships, as the beloved pet pulled various people out of difficult times in their lives and developed that special bond that comes from unconditional love and understanding. Cats are usually thought to be stand-off-ish, but the cats in these stories are undeniably loyal and attached. The people highlighted in this book are all every-day people, with their own pasts and stories to tell. Everyone has something they've gone though, but I liked that despite the trials and difficulties, they pulled through, with the help of a special cat in their lives. Some stories resonated more with me than others. The last chapter is an especially sweet tie-in to Dewey's story. Vicki Myron's "Dewey's Nine Lives: The Legacy of the Small-Town Library Cat who Inspired Millions" is a collection of 9 short stories that were sent to her based upon cats which like Dewey were inspirational in various ways. The 9 stories set across all aspects of American life are mostly well done & show the power that pets have in our daily lives. The problem at times with certain stories, though, is that the author herself interjects too much of herself & the personal lives of these individuals instead of sticking to the stories themselves. It is those cases where the short stories lose the majority of their meaning although there are enough of them out there that will touch your heart & remind us all of the impact that pets (especially cats) can have in our daily lives.
