Picture Book for Beginning Readers - Elephants Cannot Dance is about Piggie the pig teaching Gerald the elephant to dance. Gerald tries and tries but simply believes he cannot dance. However, at the end two little squirrels want Gerald to teach them the "Elephant Dance". Gerald's confidence is restored as he teaches the two squirrels to dance. The dialogue box of the pig is pink and the elephant's dialogue box is grey, making it easy for a beginning reader to understand who is talking. The drawings clearly show all of the dance movements that Piggie and Gerald are doing. There are also bold words and a lot of exclamations, which could catch the attention of a beginning reader. In the classroom, you could use this book to teach students to never give up and believe in themselves. PB35: This is a very cute Piggie and Elephant book by Mo Willems. Gerald gets very upset because he tries to learn how to dance from Piggie but cannot dance how she does. In his fit of anger he makes up a dance that the animals want to learn! It is a great story about being your own person and it shows that there is not one right way to do everything in life. I would definitely recommend this picturebook!
Eli's new favorite. He uses it like a script and asks people to act it out with him. Love.
