Fire Country (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

dnf "Well, I did enjoy "Blood red road" but I don't like this one. Barely got through the first 11% and I put it away. What I didn't like:- weird language (it made me replace every fire related word with the f/s word, which was kinda confusing sometimes)- weird home relations between Scrawny and her parents (couldn't understand her mother at all)- the whole Call fuss ;)" DID NOT FINISH.Did I read the same book as everyone else? Because this book has received RAVE reviews everywhere I looked but I thought it was so terrible that I put it down half way through. The world building was weak, which is funny because all the good reviews say the world building is amazing. If they live in an arid desert with virtually no vegetation, how does the village have a big fire that burns constantly, much less individual fires in all the homes? Why do they have a "blaze" (aka shit) pit? First of all, they should be using that for fires but secondly, in an ARID DESERT, how can that pit possibly be WET all the time? And really? Siena walk for all of an hour and was suddenly in an area with trees? Right next to an arid desert. that her hunter friend has never seen before. And how about these "Glassies?" They emerged from caves...and then miraculously built a giant glass dome to live in. HOW? In my opinion the world building was WEAK and I'm astounded that others think it was strong. YIKES.And this village....supposedly it's small and that is why we have the breeding/polygamy story. Yet Siena seems very unfamiliar with a LOT of people around there. If she was in a village that small, she'd literally know everyone. She'd have heard if a guy had drowned a kid in the well. That would be big news. And yet she seems familiar with only a tiny fraction of the people there. It was completely ridiculous and unbelievable.Apparently these people don't know the terms "month" or "week," but they have "inch" and "yard?" Sigh. The characters are weak too. Siena is DUMB. She knows she's making bad decisions, but keeps doing it anyway, without a good reason. It's hard to feel sorry for her when she gets hurt or punished for doing clearly stupid things. Plus, the whole daydreaming bit...it just seemed like a good way for the author to deal with his inability to gracefully switch between action and an internal monologue. So Siena is dumb, Circ is perfect, Dad is mean/angry...yep, that's about it.The dialect was another downer for me. It's REALLY hard to pull off a good dialect without it getting in the way and getting annoying, and Estes didn't accomplish it successfully. It seemed more like lazy writing with a few made up words thrown in there. And odd spellings. "Durt?" What's the point of misspelling ONE word like that? Some words are shortened, such as words which end in "ing" being shortened to just "in," but not all of them. Just certain words, which makes no sense. And don't even get me started on "Perry." I know that was an attempt to be funny but it was just too OBVIOUS, too in-your-face. I didn't find it funny in the least. Just annoying. Why are the inmates in Confinement working on some top-secret project which they don't go about very secretly? They aren't quiet about it and even do a role call. Anyone who comes in or out of Confinement EVER would have been alerted to what they were doing, exactly as Siena was. Like I said, she's dumb, so if she noticed, anyone would. It's not that hard to stumble upon a secret which isn't being hidden. Yet somehow no one seems to know about it? Give me a break. But of course the worst part was that the plot was completely predictable. I didn't even finish the book and I can tell you what happens, I'm sure.Weak, weak, WEAK.
